Gentlemen, Today's field was 58 with 1 visitor. The event was the 'STROKE PLAY TROPHY - ROUND 2'. Temperatures in Bowral peaked at 16 degs. I played at 9.00 with John Jones and at the 14th briefly (and proudly) held the Pro Pin. I was preparing my acceptance speech but sadly it wasn't required. Such is life. A normal round's competition fee is $12 - we pay this anyway. For an additional $3 we get the chance at the Pro Pin prize which normally is somewhere around $100-$170.
By the way - the event for next Wednesday has been changed to a single stableford - from a stroke round AND Brian Lamb tells me this will probably be his come-back round, returning from sick leave.
Bill Metcalf may venture out next Saturday in a cart on the course, watching with Neville R. and John Jones.
Pip Smith - gentleman golfer, has been selected to be one of 30 Australians to attend a Lancaster Memorial event in the UK. Pip, as we all know, is a truly inspirational person. Congratulations Pip. The 'I can feel the change' type feeling is palpable and real.
Lastly, before going to the results, today for lunch I had the Pork and Fennel Sausages with the Caramelised Onions. I say nothing more but read on. Tomorrow I have been invited to the Dad's Army lunch at the club, thank you Hamish and troops. I'll have the Pork and Fennel Sausages with the Caramelised Onions again.

Gentlemen, Sorry for the late posting of the results. Last night there was an area power failure, the club was affected and there were computer problems as a consequence. These are now resolved. RESULTS 19 May 2012 A single stableford with a field of 70, 8 visitors.

Nearest the Pin on the 14th Brian Hanrahan | | | Ball Winners Last ball winner determined on a countback | Peter Watson scored an Eagle on the 16th. The second shot was from the rough on the right-hand side of the fairway, landed on the green a few metres from the hole, rolled then disappeared. Fantastic! To say he was pleased, is an understatement. It is Peter's first Eagle. Dennis Cooper and I played with Peter, teeing off around 8:00 am. After two 4 pointers on the front 9, Peter remarked that he had never had a 5-pointer and then the Eagle - 5 points on the 16th. Well done, Peter. | How we are travelling. The Club's fortunes are turning around and this is due to you, the members, supporting the changes that are happening. The Phatt Duck's first week of operation was extremely successful. The variation provided in the menu has been welcomed and the old favourites are still available. The dinner on Friday night was sold out in 3 days and the "hatted" (Sydney Morning Herald) chef in the kitchen supervised by the Phatt Duck produced fare of the highest order. For my main course I had the duck (I fancy myself as a duck specialist) and it was superb. We are only at the end of the first week and things are still being refined but the club now makes an excellent lunch alternative - we would expect to see more guests enjoying our club and these guests may well become members. The total people on the course on Saturday was 135 - of those, 62 were members, so it is easy to see the huge contribution the visitors are making to our finances. This Sunday, 95 are booked in, most will play. Not only do they pay green fees, but they also use the club's facilities. I try and get round many or most of the visitors and welcome and ask them how they like it. Without exception they all felt welcome and have enjoyed the course. As I said at the presentation on Saturday, I think we have turned the corner now and looking down the straight. In April we made a profit and for May the figures look very good.
All the very best gentlemen, Kevin B.
| On the course The drain across the 9th has been completed which should alleviate that mushy patch that has been at the bottom of the path from the tee for a long time. Damian and Rick finished digging out the drains and Ron Campbell is forming a small team to work with him keeping the hazards free of debris and also keeping the hazard markers upright. You will notice that some of the hazard markers are slowly being changed from the wooden ones to a plastic composite. These are much more robust than the wooden ones and so will last considerably longer. The steps going up to the new tee on the 12th will be modified this week so that will make it easier to navigate. Don Barker produced the drawing to convert them to a standard size. The tree on the 11th has been trimmed so that it is possible for all people to hit towards the green. The tree still represents a challenge (I caught it on Saturday) but at least it looks more possible - things grow over time, sometimes changes don't meet with universal acclaim but the idea, for me, is to make golf enjoyable for the majority including our visitors. Bev Kemp-Clayton, with team, has improved the 13th pond dramatically. Thanks, Bev and team. My particular focus is to ensure that golfers enjoy their golf on our course. Particular points for me are to keep the rough trimmed, so we can find our balls easily and also to have the hazard markers all straight up and down and nicely aligned. It is almost like having shiny shoes - it shows we take care. And, lastly, thank you Damian and team for continuing to present us with this wonderful course. It is a wonderful course and great club. |
Gentlemen, Today we played a single stableford with a field of 58. It was a beautiful day, I played at 8:04 (below zero then ) and all the field got away, the last near 1:00 with a temperature of 13.5 degs. John Millard (my fellow competitor) had a great game.
We had three visitors, including Robert Murdoch from Hawke's Nest. Robert is the son of H.R. Murdoch who donated the original Whale's Tooth Trophy. Looking at the honour boards, he said to me that he knows many people, Ted Box and more. He played with his brother-in-law, Eddie Jones, together with Brian Frith. Eddie's wife, Annie, is Harry's daughter.
The winner today, Graham Connelly. (29) score 42 Well done Graham.
Runner-up David Boyd (15) with a score of 42, c/b. Eagles Nest not won. Nearest the pin 11th John Russell. Nearest the pin 14th Philip Allen. The Pro Pin winner on the 14th was John Jones winning a purse of $123.

We'll make a change to the way that we put up the results for knock-out competitions. Previously the loser was the one that was responsible for entering the result on the 'Draw Sheet' and this fulfilled the definition for us of 'Oficially Announced' as mentioned in the rules. Rod Clarke from NSW Golf suggested that golfers from the winning or losing side could put up the result. This should work ok. I'll include it in forthcoming 'Conditions of Competition' sheets. | Delicious The Phatt Duck | I recommend the lunches at the club, sampled so far by kb have been, the Reuben Sandwich, Chicken and Leek pie, Bread and Butter Pudding (++), Potato Rosti with Smoked Salmon. (All great meals, the ++ denotes something better than a great dish) It is only the first week but everything is going well with this. We can sit at any table we like so it may be that on occasion we can sit at a table with tablecloth and wine glasses - the choice is ours, the members.

Mother's day reduced the field but it was still pretty good. Visitor revenue was good. Our 'Fat Duck' Lunch menu is from Monday. We (K&W) will be there at 1:00. A good lunch , some wine, looking down the 18th , it doesn't get much better. So, I'll add more tomorrow, more about the course - so important, about mixed single and 4 ball events and suchlike. AND a little bit more addedHere is a few words from Golf Australia about Singles events in Conjunction with a Four Ball. | | Guidelines for Handicappers when Individual Competitions are Played Concurrently with Four-ball Stroke Play Competitions Under GA handicapping regulations, if a player competes in the singles competition, the singles score returned MUST be used for handicapping purposes. The Committee should advise all players that they must adhere to the Rules of singles competition, particularly withregard to Rule 8-1 (Advice), although note the above exception. If a player contests the fourball competition only, the GA four-ball handicapping regulations apply.

Gentlemen, a beautiful day to be alive and, as a bonus, to play golf .
It was a single stableford today played in conjunction with a 2BBB Stableford (novelty event).
A smaller field of select golfers played almost into the night with the winner of the main event:-
Graham White with a score of 37 (25) John Mulholland 37 C/B (8) a close runner up.
The Eagles Nest was won by Colin Jenkins with a win of 5 balls. Nearest the Pin - on the 11th was won by Jim Phillips & Nearest the Pin - on the 14th was won by John Mulholland (contested strongly by John Cummins) The Pro Pin won by John Mulholland $105
The novelty event was won by Ron Campbell (16) and Frank Eggert (11) with a score of 44
Well Done All
The ball winners :-
WHITE, Grahame 37 MULHOLLAND, John 37 FARTHING, David 35 HOBSON, Anthony 34 CARROLL, Paul 33 EGGERT, Francis 33 SMEE, Raymond 33 CAMPBELL, Ronald 32 SOUTHON, Ashley 32 CONOLLY, John 32 HILLYAR, David 31 COOPER, Dennis 30 GIRVEN, Peter 30 POPE, Arthur 30 BOYD, David 29 CAUST, Harry 29 C/B
And some updates. Damian and his team are doing well on the course. For 3 days we have a light excavator cleaning out the hazards with Damian driving the truck. Today we would have seen them alongside the 18th. Blocked drains have been uncovered which may improve things from the soggy area around the 2nd tee and likewise an ag. drain from around the 100m mark (from the tee) on the 18th, was uncovered. It is a little bit messy at the moment but cleaning the drains should improve the drainage of the course.
You would have also noticed that the grounds staff have been cleaning up the bunkers. I think there is one more to go, as of today.
From time to time we have been aware of water leaking around irrigation sprinklers. This is caused by a failure of the pressure reducing valve that is installed near the sprinkler head. This has been a continual problem for the last few years and the fix involved getting a new pressure reducing valve and installing it (this entailed hours of time, digging up the course, GUR, etc.). Now Damian has been successful in negotiating with the supplier to supply to us, free of charge, a large batch of pressure reducing valves so that progressively, as these leaks develop, they can be replaced at no cost other than labour (also a very scarce resource). Our greens staff will attend to the replacements as soon as they can, whilst balancing providing us a course of first quality. To my mind, three staff providing us with this course, at a consistently high standard, is fantastic.
As Kevin K. has said, the Phatt Duck is flying from the 14th May. You will have noticed, complimentary gherkins (looking appetising in their jar) are available on the bar and they are delicious - try one, they are complimentary from the Phatt Duck.
I am still learning the job but please bring anything up to me - observations, ideas, etc. We are a great club, with really great people.
All the best gentlemen, Kevin Burke

Fellow Members, This will be my last blog as you all will be aware that I did not seek re-election at last Friday's AGM. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of BGC for their goodwill, tolerance and patience during the three years I served as Captain. I would also like to thank the Board members with whom I served over these past three years, the time spent behind the scenes and dedication to running the club for the betterment of you the members is often overlooked. We now have a new Board who are taking on the task of seeing our Club through perhaps the most critical time in the club's history. I urge every member to work with these elected members with a positive attitude and leave any past criticism behind. Their job will be hard enough and they deserve our full support. From the President down there is a vast amount of previous board experience and a dedication to make this work. I am particularly pleased that Kevin Burke indicated to me some time ago as I was standing down he would stand for Captain. Kevin is one of our longest standing members having joined the club in 1984, he has served on previous boards and is an accredited Rules official. His sound business background and computer knowledge has already been of great value to the club. He is a very competent golfer with a sound knowledge of the game and to my mind with his credentials will be an outstanding Captain. Congratulations Kevin and good luck I know you have the full support of all members behind you. My thanks go to all members of the staff who continually went out of their way to make my job easier, and a special thanks to Damien and his crew who with limited resources and diabolically difficult weather conditions, without exception, presented your course in a manner that drew praise and envy from all visitors including the Pros who played the course. Look after these people who are right up there in their profession, as their dedication to their job and loyalty to the Club would be very, very difficult to replace. Once again thank you to all members for making my time as your Captain such a memorable and enjoyable time. See you on the course.

On a bitterly cold day with a howling westerly blowing, so cold and miserable even our Scottish contingent were complaining, although Pascal was still in shorts. I wonder what happened to that collection we had going to buy him a pair of long pants, perhaps it lapsed when he moved over to the Highlands. Anyway 72 brave (foolhardy) souls took part in the event. Afterwards we all repaired to the club house where some very tasty WARM finger food was served. All in all in spite of the weather a very enjoyable day. If it was cold outside the fellowship inside was warm and happy, one of the many things this Club is very good at. Thank you all.

MIXED FOURSOMES CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP 2012 In conjunction with; WOTTON TROPHY Played over two 18 hole rounds 1st & 22nd April -Field of 16 teams - CCR 68 MIXED FOURSOMES - Scratch Winners - Stephie Whiteway & Brian Hanrahan - Rnd 1 88/Rnd 2 90 -Total 178 scr. Their first round of 88 proved the difference after a spirited challenge from Bev Kemp-Clayton and Sam Hunt who posted an equal score of 90 in the second round. Kathy and Greg Barnsley finished a further five shots back on 185. Conditions weren't easy on both days with a heavy course and a lightning interruption to play on the first day WOTTON TROPHY The day turned out to be the Stephie and Brian show with the same team taking out the nett event as well. I think it is some time since the a team has won both events. First round leaders Rosemary and Terence Downing just fell short losing on a countback with a second round of 73. Still with rounds of 69 and 73 is a very creditable performance which augers well for the future and, you were just beaten by a very experienced pairing. Thanks to all players who braved the elements for both days. The two rounds are usually played a week apart but heavy rain forced the postponement of the second round by three weeks. This time difference caused some confusion with the handicapping as the second round cards were printed with all players current handicaps. In two round events such as this the handicaps remain the same for both rounds. My apologies for this oversight.

Although not long off the tee David makes up for that with a quality short game once again proving the old adage "you drive for show and putt for dough." Congratulations David you are a worthy winner.
