Card Draw for 1 doz. Golf Balls - David Stanley
Unfortunately due to preferred lies through the green and the bunkers being compulsory GUR this event could not be handicapped - good for some but not for others. It's an ill wind.
Owing to the deluge during the week we were very lucky to get on as the course was very heavy although not as bad as I expected. Under these trying conditions nine players managed to play to par figures or better. In spite of the preferred lies and the bunkers being out of play Leigh Batchelors' 64 and David Farthings' 65 were oustanding efforts. My personal thanks to Michael Fitzgerald who after twenty odd tries managed to pull my card out in the card draw. To those players whose cards were drawn out but were not in attendance, commiserations, I really feel for you.
It has been noted that some players who are either house members or are unfinancial are playing in competition rounds. To save embarrasment please check your elegibility to play before entering.
Due to the information meeting due to commence at 6.00pm sharp, I request all players have their cards in by 5.00pm to enable the presentation to be completed prior to 6.00pm
WHITEHORSE CUP - FIRST ROUND - SUNDAY FEBRUARY 5th.

Jim Phillips won 1 up
Don Barker won 3/2
David Burgess won 6/4
Chris Green lost 6/4
Alan Turpie won 3/2
David Mathers won 2/1
Roger Williams lost 3/2
Dons Party really hit the ground running to record a first round win inthe first round. This to my knowledge is the first time in living memory Bowral has won their opening round which augers well for the rest of the competition. Don organised a bonding session the previous Sunday at Wollongong with Craig Langby in attendance to offer encouragement and advice. Well it obviously worked Don and I thought it a nice touch for each player to exchange a red rose and offer their undying commitment to the team and the club for the rest of the competition. (No David you can't have all the roses.)Then in a huddle Don recited Henry V's speech "We band of brothers........." etc. Truly inspirational!
Chris obviously suffered a case of "first night nerves" but as our "B" grade champion we know this was only a minor setback and Chris you will come back stronger than ever, YOU CAN DO IT. Perhaps a double scotch before you hit off may help settle nerves. Take no notice of the comment by JM your position is safe. Perhaps the crashing of the waves on the beach behind the trees reminded Roger of the good old days in Florida and his mind may have wandered. This defeat may be the wake up call he needed for total concentration next time.
Next week we play Vincentia at the Highlands with, apart from David Burgess a completely new team who I am told are the Bowral "big guns". Well chaps the gauntlet is down to maintain the momentum of last week. Put your shoulder to the wheel, your nose to the grindstone and your best foot forward - Good Luck. (By the way let me see you play golf in that position.)
Seriously, well played and good luck.
David Stanley
Captain.
