Kevin Saturday's comp was a single stableford with a field of 10. Chris Harvey, winner on Wednesday, continued his form with another win. We received an email from the Captain of the Illawarra District Golf Association @2:45am cancelling the round today of the White Horse Cup Captains Due to the terrible weather over the past day or two, the IDGA has cancelled the complete round for 24.02.13. If possible it would be nice to try to inform the teams that have to travel long distances. No matches will be played. Regards Stephen Harrod Captain IDGA The majority of the rain was past Bowral by 4am Sunday. We had 98 mm from 7am Saturday to 7am Sunday The field for the day was small with 10 players completing the comp. stay dry

Paul Pettiford lost 2/1 David Boyd won 6/4 (team captain) Alan Turpie won 3/2 David McGuiness halved. David Mathers lost 4/3. Piero Dal Bianco We welcomed this week new member Piero Dal Bianco. has been a many time visitor to and club and is a familiar face in our competition when he is in Bowral. This week we have available in the Pro-Shop new putter grips. These grips incorporate a suction cup on the end of the grip that allows removal of the ball in the hole without bending down. Rather than using the head of a putter to remove the ball from the hole this sort of grip allows removal of the ball from the hole without risking damage to the side of the hole. Update - price is $15.00 On Friday March 15th the club has a fitting day with Titleist Equipment. Wally is 96 years old and he says he is yet to score a hole-in-one. They dropped in on their way back from Kangaroo Valley all the best Kevin
Wednesday's comp was a 2BBB stableford with a field of 64 players. The course is in top condition and the temperature was a max of 21 - very pleasant. Ball winners. The ball winners went down to 43 with the last ball winner determined by a count back. Ashley Southon The Winter Eclectic winner was incorrectly publicised as Jim Phillips in the members handbook. The actual winner was Ashley Southon winning both the Gross and Net Eclectic The presentation night is this Saturday. New member Alec Dietsch came to the Highlands 6 years ago and joined the club last month The Stroke Index. The stroke index gives the order of holes at which handicap strokes awarded should be taken. A group comprising, John Mulholland ,Don Barker, Haille Smith, David Boyd, Brian Hanrahan. & Peter Keys and chaired by Don has come back with a recommendation. In asking the group to look at a new index I wrote to Don :- "A new index must be arrived at in a transparent fashion and be defendable. We need to have an index that satisfies the rules, the guidelines, and the spirit. A new index will by necessity be a compromise." This is the groups recommendation. Don has written "The recommendation is based on;- Golf Aust reference to balancing each nine - odds then evens Statistics related to two representive groups of golfers over the full calander year 2012. Group A being the 25 % of playing members with the lowest handicaps. 0 - 19 . average 9.5 ( 39 players ) Group B being players 15 to 20 strokes higher than group A. ie H'cap range 25 - 30 average 27.5( 42 players ) These groups comprise half of all playing members who retiurned some 2500 cards. The computer generated a stroke index for each group. This was then balanced for each group by mechanically allocating index 1 -front 9 index 2 back nine index 3 front nine and so on in order.to 18. When balanced, there is an appreciable difference between the two groups on some holes - eg hole 15 is index 14 for lower markers but 8 (8+18=26) for higher markers Therefore we strongly recommend indexing to 36 as a single index would involve personal judgement, unnecessary compromise,or disregard the needs of one or other group After testing the stroke index generated by the above process, against the judgement of each committee member,It was decided that further review was unnecessary and would simply introduce an element of " opinion " and very minor changes wihich would be of little consequence." The recommendation is in the table below and I invite comment. I am sure that there will be differences in opinion and all opinions will be considered opinions and hence will be treated with equal weight. My thanks to the group to preparing and putting forward this new index. Please have a look at the proposed new stroke index - comments are welcome.
Please bring up any matters to do with golf, dates for fixtures etc or the course with me - that's what the Captain is here for. Email is preferred and I'm also at the club during the day - morning is best. all the best Kevin The competition today was a 2 person aggregate with a (select) field of 64. Ball winners Sorry for the late posting of the results, as you probably know there was an issue with the internet. In particular with Telstra Bigpond Business users including the Radio Station 2ST and ourselves. This started at 1:34 am on Saturday and continued to around 4:30pm or so on Sunday. The Pro Pin. It has been considered for some time to extend the Pro Pin on the 14th to visitors, so we started a trial for 1 month last Saturday. The idea is to see if it is worthwhile both to the members and the club. On one side there should be more money in the kitty to compete for, but there is a 'risk' that a non member may win it. It's an open competition and I suppose there is an argument that if they pay their money and are fortunate enough to get nearest the pin, then they deserve it. For some time visitor fees on Saturday have included competition entry so extending the Pro Pin to visitors can be considered just an extension of that. In either case they must spend the money in the club. Visitors entering the Pro Pin must be a member's guest or playing in a group with a member. A bigger 'purse' should result but we'll see. I've entered in every Pro Pin but as yet being 'closest' has been close but not close enough to be closest. Last Saturday I had a very enjoyable game with new member (and my partner) Alec Dietsch (2 / 4 on the 14th), Alan Lindsay and his partner Bob Constable. Bob is returning to golf after having a complex procedure done on his eye (which still has to be zeroed in so he can get those putts). The photo shows Alan using both his extensive knowledge of the rules and his considerable strength, moving, in a very determined fashion, a fallen branch from a tree on the 17th to afford him a more direct shot to the pin. My partner Alec played very well and allowed the Captain to be in the winning pair out of our 4 ball. The Lady versus men's Captain versus Captain's Event has been rescheduled now from Sunday 17th Feb. until the 5th of May following a request from the Lady Captain. Likewise the Hip & Knee Trophy Event will be delayed following a request from last year's organiser until a date in May also. The final date and details of the Hip & Knee Trophy will be published when available. The White Horse Cup. Both Bowral Teams were successful again last weekend - an excellent result. WHC 10-2-13 Don Barker captain of Bowral Team 1 advised that Bowral team 1 defeated Links Shell Cove at Jamberoo today 3-1/2 matches to 1-1/2 Frank Eggert won 2/1 Ashley Southon won 6/4 Pascal Timores lost 4/3 Paul Carroll squared David Stanley won 5/4 David Boyd - Team 2 captain was very pleased to advise that Bowral Team 2 defeated St. Georges Basin today at Highlands 5 matches to 0. Dave Burgess won 5/3 Paul Pettiford won 5/4. David Boyd won 5/3 David McGinnes won 5/4 David Mathers won 5/4. Once again an excellent result with Bowral at this stage leading the competition by a narrow half point from Moss Vale. The Stroke Index Review Group has reported back with a unanimous recommendation which I will publicise in the blog shortly for comment. all the best Kevin Wednesday's single stableford had a field of 73. The last of the field was in at 5:23pm and the members room was full for the presentation. Good to see. Ron Campbell celebrated his 86th birthday Monday. Gloria and Ron have been married 60 years today (Thursday). Ron got 35 points Wednesday and plays off 18. An impressive set of figures. Eddie Jones starts the second leg of his challenge to cycle the length of New Zealand. He completed the length of the North Island last year and today goes to NZ to cycle from the Bluff at the bottom end on the South Island up to Nelson at the north of the South Island. Click here to see his website. Ball winners Good golfing gentlemen,
Kevin The January Monthly Medal was played in wet conditions with the bunkers marked GUR. The A Grade winner, David Burgess had a round of 81 off the stick which, he told me, included 4 putts on the 10th (for a 7). David Stanley narrowly beat John Cummins (David won the B Grade on a count back scoring one better than John on the back 9). Tony Fitzpatrick had the lowest scratch with 80 off the stick - not bad in the wet conditions. Tony Dick and David Stanley preparing the results. Tony Dick and David Stanley preparing the results. The score cards, after being put into the touch screen by the players are checked by the scorers and marked off the competition sheet. The complete field is checked and the scores of players whose card does not appear in the computer results are investigated and those that have NCR'd are excluded from the results. Sometimes there is difficulty when a player's golflink number is not recognised by the system and these anomalies must be sorted out before the result is known. Once the competition is closed with all cards being accounted the results can then be compiled - count-backs are checked before the final result is known. The ball winners for the day are decided by a calculation that takes into account the number in the competition field and players scores - again a count-back system is used. Those ball winners together with the winners of the 'nearest the pins', Eagles Nest and Pro-pin are put on the results sheet and and then the presentation can be done . All of these steps can only take place once the last player has entered his card into the system and any anomalies are explained. Hence sometimes it can seem like a long time until the presentation can be made - especially if a ball could be won but our 'Card Sharps' are going as fast as their volunteer fingers can go. click to enlarge We are always in the hands of the weather. Too dry or too wet- both have consequences. Too dry and it costs the club to run the irrigation system for long periods. During these periods the trees suffer also. Too wet - and sometimes carts are not permitted so those golfers that depend on carts cannot compete in competitions denying them a chance of success. In wetter weather the course can be closed. Casual water on the course make competition difficult. Flooded greens make a competition impossible. When the course is closed our revenue from visitors stops. On more clement days it is often heard that 'we enjoy the changes of seasons in the highlands'. Sometimes the seasonal change occurs within a week ! The Trophy Presentation dinner is on Saturday the 16th Feb. Bookings can be made at the bar or by telephoning the club after 10:30 and asking to make a booking for the evening. Please pay at the bar before the night - $45 per person. Captain V Captains Trophy The Lady v Mens Captains Event is coming up on the 17th of this month. The comp has been set up on the computer for 11:58 to 12:30 on Sunday the 17th Feb. The men hold the trophy at present, winning 436 to 422 in 2012. The comp is a single stableford played in 4s. Marilyn & Bob Wood Bob and Marilyn Wood will be out-of-action for a period after having their rotator cuffs repaired. A good photo opportunity not missed by Kevin Kenny in the clubhouse today. Our Mischa Aksenoff is playing in the the 2013 Coca-Cola Rich River Classic. Here is a link to an article on the PGA website. click here The PGA will be updating their website once the tournament starts tomorrow. The White Horse Cup We are in the Illawarra Golf Association's area and we field two teams in the White Horse Cup. The White Horse Cup is a singles knockout competition against other clubs in the area. Our teams are captained by Don Barker for Bowral team 1 and David Boyd for Bowral team 2. On the weekend they had a marvellous result, soundly beating their opponents Russell Vale at Jamberoo and Nowra at Worrigee. Well done.
