What a year it has been !
We started off the year with extremely wet weather and the forecast was not good. March saw the arrival of Kevin Kenny, our new secretary manager, and together with a new board, much member support and many changes, gradually the forecast improved. The members support was critical. The Phatt Duck arrived in May and fortunes in the kitchen turned around. Many successful functions have been held and visitors to the course and club have increased dramatically. Membership is now on the increase with new social and golfing members including former members rejoining. The atmosphere in the club is changed. A recent group of visitors wrote in to express their thanks at the welcome they received at our club and how much they enjoyed the 'gracious ambience'. We have been a club since 1901 and at our address in Kangaloon Rd since 1917. Our club is proud of its traditions and now is very pleased to be looked upon as a club with a welcoming ambience.
On the course there have been steady improvements, improvements that foster the enjoyment of golf but also leave the challenge there. Great work by the ground staff gave us a course that visitors comment favourably on continually. My thanks to them and also the members of the Match and Greens committee, our handicapper and those gentlemen who produce the results of the competition.
Most of all my thanks to the members, it's a great club and for me it's a great pleasure to be Captain.
All the very best for 2013.
Happy New Year.
Kevin
Saturday's competition was a Single Stableford with a comp field of 66.
The winner:
Tony Fitzpatrick (14) score 43
r/u
Dennis Cooper (20) score 40
Last score for balls was 33 and the last winner was determined by a countback
As you may be aware our course was 'measured' last year in August. We have followed up with Golf NSW many times but so far have not received an estimate of when to expect out course to receive its slope rating. Golf Australia had forecast that the ratings would be complate by the end of 2011. Locally, only the smaller courses have been rated (shown green in the photo). The new slope system being introduced is in use in the USA and while the course rating is for the scratch golfer the slope system takes into account the difficulty of the course for the bogey golfer. For example the water hazard on 2nd is not in play for a scratch golfer but is for the bogey golfer so the slope system uses this in the calculation of the difficulty of the course for the bogey golfer. A full and more precise definition of the slope system can be found on the Golf Australia website. http://www.golfaustralia.org.au/
all the very best
Kevin
