Kevin The second round of qualifying for the Club Championships was played Saturday. Congratulations to the qualifiers. A little bit of history about the championships. The Club Championship was first played for in 1923 and was won by J N Miller. The current holder is Brian Hanrahan, the number 1 qualifier this year. The current holder is Neville Ridge The Hastings Clark Cup is in Honour of Hastings Carnegie Clark who gave almost 50 years of honourable service to the Club as the Club Professional. He was elected an Honorary Life Member of the Club on his retirement in 1982. The current holder is Chris Green For the draws please refer to the 'Updated Draws' tab at the top of the page (or click the underlined link). These will be updated from time to time and at the completion of each of the rounds. The matches in the Club Championship are each played over 36 holes, for 'B' and 'C' grades over 18 holes. If matches are square at the end of the stipulated round then play continues until a decision is reached. No extensions in time are permitted to complete rounds except in exceptional circumstances. For the actual 'Conditions Of Competition' please click the underlined link. The club championships are the highlight of the golfing calendar for the year. All matches are match play format. The finals always draw a good gallery. Congratulations again to the qualifiers. Play well Kevin
On Saturday the second qualifying round of the club championships and the final round of the Veterans Trophy was held in conjunction with a single stroke event. The Single Stroke EventThe winner Peter Girven (26) score 61 r/u Taffy McCarten (28) score 63 Ball winners The Veterans Trophy 2012The Veterans Trophy is open to players 65 years and older. The contest ran over 2 weeks and was a handicap event. The winner is the player with the lowest aggregate score over the 2 weeks. This year's winner Peter Girven (26) Score 134 r/u David Boyd (15) Score 144 c/b Club Championships Qualifying ResultsThe final round of the club championships were played on Saturday. The qualifying extends over two weeks and the grades are slightly different from the normal grades we play in, in that A grade extends to a handicap of 12 instead of 14. Not all players played in all rounds and those who did play in all rounds, some chose not to compete to qualify for the knockout part of the championship. My announcement of the qualifiers on Saturday was not without incident. The results of the qualifying rounds are shown below. Those players who are eligible to nominate to compete in the club championships must inform the Captain by 9 am Monday morning. Extract from the Conditions of the competition The best eight 36-hole scratch scores eligible in each grade; will qualify for the Club Championship play-offs. At least, two members must qualify in a grade for that grade’s play-offs to proceed, otherwise the championship will not be awarded for the year. All qualifying positions will be determined by count-back. Members not wanting to participate in the Club Championships should mark their score card “NTQ”. (i) If a member should qualify for more than one grade, he may only play in one grade. He must notify the Club Captain which grade he wishes to play in, prior to the presentation at the conclusion of the Qualifying Week 2 event. The qualifiers for each grade will be announced at the presentation. Please note that the time for notification has been extended until Monday at 9am My thanks to the gentlemen working out the results. Without their assistance it would be difficult to run the competition especially on a day where there are three separate events. We had well over 100 on the course on Saturday including a group from north of Newcastle - they plan to return next year, they were very impressed with the course, their lunch and the friendliness of our members. You may have noticed a contraption just south of the croquet lawn. Whilst it may look like something from Dr Who it is actually an automatic rain gauge device. It was installed by a hydrologist from the state government. It automatically sends rainfall measurements back to a logging station via an inbuilt GSM data link. Why? During times of heavy rainfall much of the stormwater ends up in the sewer system. I was told that 10mm of rain can double the amount of fluids handled by the sewerage system. This leakage into the system comes from stormwater finding its way into vents of the sewerage system. This in turn then overloads the treatment plant and can overload the sewer itself so that spillage can occur. What the idea is with this device (there have been 7 installed in Bowral), is to measure the rainfall at various places in Bowral and at the same time measure the flows in the sewerage system to ascertain where the leakage of stormwater into the sewerage system is coming from. The device will be there for a few weeks. Interesting for some! At the club we use 3 main mowers (apart from the rotary 'rough' mowers). The fairways mower, the surrounds mower and the greens mower. Each year at about this time the reels on the mowers are sharpened. The reels are sent away to a company in Camden and hollow ground. The plates are also ground. The cost of this is approx. $2,500. Sharp blades produce a cleaner cut of each blade of grass resulting in less chance of disease and overall better health of the plant. Apart from sharpening the blades the machines are inspected daily and maintained at the recommended intervals. Maintaining this equipment is of paramount importance if they are to have a long and reliable life. The intention is to extend the time that we keep the mowers beyond the lease period. We are about to replace the 'Twister' which we have had since 2004 and now is deemed to be beyond its use by date. A Kioti Mechtron Utility vehicle is to be purchased. It is a 4 wheel drive, with a 22hp diesel motor and a 750kg tipping cargo tray. The use of good machines allows us to operate with minimal manning - a staff of 3 on our course maintaining it and presenting it in the way that they do, is a credit to the grounds staff. All the best and enjoy your golf as the weather improves. The Single Stableford on Wednesday attached a field of 61 players. The winner Bill Pope (26) score of 41 c/b R-Up John Jones (17) score 41 Ball Winners were:- There is a new Point of Sale system (POS) being commissioned today. The system runs on a new server computer and provides many more features and facilities than the older system. Today there may be some problems during the changeover - we hope to minimise these.

They went from our course to play at Mt Broughton on Saturday and Moss Vale on Sunday. We have extended an invitation for them to visit again. Kevin The Boxmor Trophy was played Saturday and it was a very well supported event. In the competition teams were selected by President Ian McKenzie and me. Past presidents of the club play on the president's side and past captains on the captain's side. It was close in that there were 17 matches and of these 12 had a margin of two points or less. Many were settled on the 18th President Ian accepts congratulations from the Captain The result of the day was the President's side won 10 matches against the Captain's 7 - congratulations Ian. I sought to improve the Captain's side chances by playing with Mischa and whilst Ian and Ray were leading most of the match, we drew one ahead on the 16th and then my partner and I promptly put our balls out of bounds on the 17th, we were then one down BUT we had a chance on the 18th where Mischa (on his handicap of 2!) gets a shot and I get two shots. Ray and Ian only got one shot each. Unfortunately we missed the putts - I three putted (aaah) and we lost by 1 point. A very enjoyable game.
Thank you to those teams that represented the Captain's side. This year it was not to be. The Summer Eclectic sign up sheet is now on the notice board by the locker room. The entry fee is $10.00 as in previous years The Eclectic score is the lowest score obtained at each hole in Club competition over the above 6 month period. These scores are then totalled for the full eighteen holes and subject to deduction of half of the player’s handicap as it stands on the last day of the competition. The player with the lowest score is the winner. People on the course this weekend. We had 116 players on Saturday and 99 on Sunday Just a (very) small update - Club Championships . The two qualifying rounds for the club championship start this Saturday. The competition conditions are on the Notice Board at the club and also can be seen by clicking the button to the right of this blog entry. Please ensure that you are available to play in all rounds otherwise please mark your card NTQ (not to qualify) . This Saturday the Monthly Medal will be played in conjunction. all the best Kevin
Gentlemen, Wednesday's Comp was a single Stableford with a 2bbb in conjunction. It has been scored only as a 2bbb and prizes awarded on that basis. The winners Roger Williams (24) & Paul Pettiford (12) score 49 r/u Eddie Jones (20) & Bryan Firth (22) score 46 Ball winners The Boxmor Trophy is played for this Saturday. This is between a team picked by the President and one picked by the Captain. This selection will take place on Friday when Ian and I will take alternate picks from the field entered on the computer at that stage. The sheet will be marked up and the 2bbb cards marked with a 'P' or a 'C' according to what team the 2bbb team is to represent.

There is an issue with the computer scoring system (which will be corrected asap) so the results available through the website results' link are incorrect - the correct results are as below. Winners were Alan Turpie (20) Alastair Fotheringham (16) Score 45 R/U David Farthing (23) Warren Ryan (19) Score 44 c/b The lady members of Bowral Golf Club held their General Meeting on Thursday, 4th October 2012. A new committee was elected at this meeting. Retiring was Bernadette Brown, President; Pam Barker, Captain and Robyn McGinnes, Committee. Nominations for the new positions were posted and the new committee was appointed unopposed. Recently we had our greens renovated. This involves coring and then topdressing the greens with sand. They are almost recovered now and back to 'normal' conditions. The greens have a blend of bent and winter grass and each grass has very different characteristics. Our 'micro climate' at Kangaloon Road is not the same as other golf courses in the area. As the weather warms up the growing season starts. Once the soil temperature rises above 12-13 degs everything starts to become active in the soil. Plants are able to utilise the nutrients in the soil. Our soil is tested periodically in a laboratory certified by ASPAC. The last tests confirmed the health of our soils and allow Damain, with advice from technical representatives, to 'tune' the amount and type of products used. Recently we have been trialling a range of biological controls. By and large these have been a success although they have had an impact on our Poa Annua (winter grass) resulting in discolouration and impeded growth. There are a number of advantages in using these controls and the plan is to slowly continue with their introduction but we have to get the balance right. The advantages of these biological agents are many including less cost and better performance from the grasses on the greens. all the best gentlemen Kevin
