Wednesday's competition was a single stableford with a field of 54 players The winner was Tony Dick (26) with a score of 40 Runner up Doug Ruttan (38) with a score of 38 The Captains Trophy single stroke event was played on Saturday. The winner was John Cooper (31) with a net 63 Runner up was Doug Ruttan (34) also with a net 63 c/b John won the Captains Trophy and also a Royal Doulton Crystal Prism Decanter Set which was filled on the night with Isle of Jura single malt whisky. The Jura distillery celebrates it's 200th anniversary this year. Each year on the evening of the Captains Trophy event, a dinner is held. It is one of two formal dinners - the other being the President's Dinner which was held earlier in the year. Some photographs from the evening can be seen below. Ball winners - the last winner was determined by a count back. Neville Ridge played his age again on Saturday after doing it for the first time on the previous Wednesday. Saturday's round of 77 off the stick in the same week shows what a great golfer he is. His 77 on Saturday got him third place in the Captains Trophy. The Captains Trophy dinner was held in the clubhouse on Saturday night. The Samuel Horden Room is the main function room in the club and comfortably holds 80 people. The tradition is that previous Captains are invited to form tables - 8 Captains, past and present, attended the dinner. The room was decorated by Jan & Warwick Lane and my wife, Wendy. It looked spectacular. Board member Bob Kemp was the MC and the loyal toast was given by past Captain and past President Brian Lamb. Our Patron, Don Barsby, was unable to attend the evening and nominated Brian. Brian Hanrahan proposed the toast to Captains past and present and gave an eloquent and amusing speech. I replied, beginning with a quote from Lord Reading where he urged brevity in speeches - he said " Always be shorter than anyone dared to hope". The evening started with drinks and canapes served in the John Oxley Room with the beautiful voice of Bronwyn Kenny singing a medley of songs accompanied by Mark Dabin. The main course was served followed by dessert and dessert wine, coffee and chocolates. The dinner provided by the Phatt Duck and his team was of the absolute highest quality and the acolades were universal. It was a wonderful evening. Practice rounds. Members are reminded that a maximum of two balls are permitted when they play a practice round on the course. Sand buckets must be carried at all times. AND ... just in case you are wondering 'Captains Trophy' I have used 'Captains' without an apostrophe - ie in the adjectively use of the pural. As the Sydney Morning Herald says from time to time 'this correspondance is now closed' all the best.
Wednesday's single stableford competition was played with a field of 50. The temperature rose to 19deg during the day. Wonderful weather. The winner on a handicap of 15 was Neville Ridge with a score of 45 R/U was a visitor from the Highlands Golf Club John Durbin with a score of 43 Astute Jim Dickson profited from his speculative investment of $3 in the ProPin for a return of $105 (ROI 35%). People observing the ex stockbrokers current investments will now, no doubt, be future investors in the Pro Pin - if they weren't before. Ball winners This coming Saturday's competition is the Captains Trophy. Jim Dickson donated the perpetual trophy for this event in 1995. As for the President's Trophy the presentation, that is normally made at the end of the competiton in the afternoon, will be made during the Captains Dinner held on Saturday evening.
Members are reminded that Greenstaff have the right of way on the course. After this weekend the greenstaff will be slicing the fairways. Enjoy the weather gentlemen. Saturday's competition was an aggregate stableford - teams of 2. Well ahead of the field were winners Brian Lamb (22) and Warren Ryan (21) with a score of 75 (Brian had 45 points by himself) R/U Neville Ridge (15) and John Connolly (21) with a score of 45. Ball winners Clubhouse Repair Work All quotes are in and the building contract was signed 0n Friday - work will start on Tuesday. As you are aware it was damaged after a car collided with the building on 22nd July at 12:44 in the morning. A contract has beeen awarded to Conners Building to do the repair. The total value of the contract is around $33,000 - there will be some add-ons which will become necessary as work reveals additional items needing attention. We plan to re-work the entrance as an extension to the building contract. This will be funded from donations for this specific project. Vice President Frank Eggert has donated a good sum, this has already been matched. The re-work will include a wider door, going from the entrance to the members room, to facilitate entry for those who require assistance. The member's entrance probably has not been considered an architectural highlight of the club and the re-work will make it much more attractive. In the past, many things within the club have been donated by members. The second trophy cabinet in the Member's Room was constructed using funds donated by the members. New staff uniforms, serving trolley and crockery for the John Oxley Room (arriving soon) have all been donated by a generous member. The Captains Trophy The Captains Trophy event is played next Saturday. It's a single stroke handicap event played over 18 holes. Here is an extract form Doug Stalley's " Bowral Golf Club 1901 - 2001" about it. "The Captains Trophy event has been held over most of the Club’s history, though records prior to the 1970s have not been kept, nor found. The custom has been for the winner to receive a personal trophy courtesy of the captain that year. (The same holds for the presidents.) In 1929, the winner was T.J. Finlay and we know this because the trophy is still in the possession of his family. The captain in 1995, J.B. Dickson, presented a silver figurine as a perpetual trophy which records the names of the winners since then." Personal Trophy to be awarded to the Winner of the Captains Trophy The personal trophy, this year, is a Royal Doulton Crystal Prism Decanter Set. This will be awarded to the winner of the event at the Captains Dinner which is held on the night of the competition. Handicapper - John Dash has announced his impending retirement. John has been responsible for setting up the competitions and managing the handicaps for the last 11 years. While the new computer system that we have does a fair proportion of the work there is still significant work in setting up the competitions which, believe me, is a task that requires meticulous attention to detail. The different types of competitions all have to be set up accurately. A simple single stableford is at one end of the spectrum of complexity and at the other end one could have a stroke competition played over two weeks with the the begining handicaps carried over the two rounds and the results shown in net order in divisions. Don Barker - new handicapper - has generously offered his time to take over this role. Don is also one of those gentlemen who receives the cards at the end of the competition, checks them and then organises the results (my public thank you is recorded again). Together with the handicapping committee the handicaps are awarded for new golfers to the club where a new handicap is required and adjustments are made to existing handicaps where an 'extraordinary' adjustment is required. Loan. Following extensive negotiations with the Wingecarribee Shire Council, the councillors voted on Wednesday the 8th of August to provide an interest free loan of $50,000 over five years to the club. An extract from the council minutes follows: "CW 200/12 The Committee on a MOTION moved by Clr G McLaughlin and seconded by Clr D Stranger RECOMMENDED: 1. THAT Council agree to provide an Interest Free Loan up to $50,000 to the Bowral Golf Club, repayable over a maximum of five (5) years with quarterly instalments of $2,500.00, with funds to be allocated from Council’s Property Development Reserve. 2. THAT Council enter into a loan agreement with the Bowral Golf Club with the agreement to include provision for interest penalty payments if loan repayments fall in arrears AND THAT the Mayor and General Manager be authorised to execute the agreement under the Common Seal of Council. PASSED Dissenting vote: Clr K Halstead, Clr J C Clark and Clr J Mauger requested that their dissenting votes be recorded in respect of this motion. " Website. Our new website is now on line www.bowralgolfclub.com.au (click on the link) is the principal way visitors find out about our club. We track the number of visits to our website each day and these are increasing. The new-look website shows the club and what we can provide visitors during a visit. We have partnered with several accommodation houses and links to their websites and booking accommodation can be accessed through the website. Member bookings can also be made. I am now working on changes to our member's website www.bowralgolfclub.info and this redesign should be complete within the next weeks. Rather than updating the website on the day of the competition I'll be doing this the following morning in future. Visitors from Bass Hill RSL. On Sunday the club were hosts to a group of 20 players from the Bass Hill RSL Golf Club. These gentlemen have been coming to the club for over 10 years and enjoy the course. They played an ambrose and finished off with a meal in the John Oxley Room - fillet steak. They run a couple of charity days in their club and the money raised provides a part subsidy to those members of their club that have difficulty meeting the fees of a golf day from their own resources

With visitor revenue being a major source of income for the club we want to ensure that our course is available on the weekends whenever possible. Many or most of our visitors come from outside the district but here is a social group from the Royal Hotel, Bowral on the first tee this Sunday. The club's Taffy McCarten is in the photo, third from the right, as is an old friend Pete Mulquinney, left. Now our club is seeing more and more visitors and they are very welcome. When the weather warms up, we would expect an increase in the numbers playing. Some Saturday's we have had over 60 visitors playing and most come from Sydney. Now that we have food available throughout the weekend (a full menu is available until 2:30 on Saturdays) with the Phatt Duck's wonderful pies and sandwiches available the rest of the time. The view down the 18th fairway provides a great vista for those visiting the clubhouse.
The trees are now in blossom so spring is not too far away - at last.
and last of all:- James Newton Demaret was an American professional golfer. He won 31 PGA Tour events in a long career between 1935 and 1957, and was the first three time winner of the Masters. Macarthur Mercedes are also one of our tee- sponsors Pace of Play and Identification of your ball Below is an extract from the Rules Booklet. Two areas I have highlighted by 'bolding'. They are Pace of Play and Identification of your ball. The issue of slow play has been raised by previous Captains of our club continually and it needs to be addressed again. Groups playing the course must keep up with the group in front. Falling behind the group ahead has a ripple effect through the field and results in the everyone else on the golf course that is following slowing to the pace of the slow group. While all of the group is responsible for the pace of play of the group and our practice is that the player with the lowest handicap in the group is the one that reminds the fellow players to keep up (speed up).
Identification of your ball. Make sure your ball is marked with some 'special' mark to distinguish it from other balls of the same make and number. Many players use Titleist Pro V1 and many are lost of the course. If you are searching for your ball and find 'your' Titleist Pro V1, a number 4, this is not evidence that it is your ball unless your ball has got some identifying mark on it. In matches the referee will ask the players to show him/her their ball and how they have identified it. "General Points The game of golf should be played in the correct spirit and to understand this you should read the Etiquette Section in the Rules of Golf. In particular:
On cutting trees - When I was at school the US President was Dwight Eisenhower. He was a distinguished soldier. In the second World War he served as the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe. As President of the United States he was commander-in-chief of the United States Armed Forces. He was also on the Board of Governors of Augusta National Golf Club. An extract from Wikipedia "Eisenhower Tree Also known as the "Eisenhower Pine", a loblolly is located on the 17th hole, approximately 210 yards (192 m) from the Masters tee. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, an Augusta National member, hit the tree so many times that, at a 1956 club meeting, he proposed that it be cut down. [10] Not wanting to offend the president, the club's chairman, Clifford Roberts, immediately adjourned the meeting rather than reject the request." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusta_National_Golf_Club Here is a great quote from the man I offer without comment. "Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil and you're a thousand miles from the corn field." Dwight D. Eisenhower You may have seen these cards around the club. They are to promote our club as a destination for Golf and Food. Reverse side of the card. Please use them to pass on to golfers. The $49 fee includes the comp fee for those that wish to play in the comp. Have a great week gentlemen.
