I'll be keeping this blog exclusively for men's golf matters. Please look in the 'BGC News' blog for general golf and other news. Click here please to go to the general news blog.
all the best Kevin Saturday competition was a single stableford and attracted a field of 58. Here is the last extract from Golf Computer Systems advice about the new handicapping system Hole by Hole Score Entry GOLFLink / Golf Australia advise that all scores sent to GOLFLink must be in the form of Stableford scores. In a Par round this can be calculated as the Par score + 36. In a Stroke round this MUST be calculated from the individual strokes returned on each hole. Consequently, on a Stroke round the golfer will be required to enter his Gross per hole, calculate his Net per hole, and also record his Stableford points per hole. It is likely that this will impact on scorecard layout. A benefit of printing the inner-face of scorecards on demand is that changes in layout or in meters, par or indexing do not render the card redundant. A change in any of these areas is reflected on the next card printed. The correct calculation of Stableford points is a requirement of course. Consequently there is an expectation that electronic score entry will be entered hole-by-hole and the necessary calculation and validation of points performed. Golf Australia's advice on the responsibility for calculation of Stableford scores is as follows:
‘Change is in all things sweet.’ — Aristotle Handicapper Don Barker and I will be attending a NSW Golf seminar in Sydney on Tuesday about the changes to the handicapping system. Following the seminars Golf NSW has said that there will be a Powerpoint presentation available on line. I'll endeavour to get this presentation onto our website (obtaining permission first from Golf NSW) so that those interested can step through the main items of this new, long awaited, system.
The Telstra Tower at the 8th green/ 9th tee is underway. The entrance and area around the tower has been prepared and work on the electrics and the tower itself should begin soon. Good golfing and stay warm. Kevin. A cool day for today's single stableford. Saturday Competition Times The competition on Saturday and Wednesdays is now run from the pro-shop. On Saturdays Full Playing Members can book in at any time in any group to play in the competition. When booking outside of the competition times members should be aware that there may be social groups playing around the same time. If members have concerns regarding the pace of play or other issues the correct procedure is to contact the proshop who will attend to it. Any changes to tee times or cancellations on the day of play should be done through the pro-shop. Six Day Playing Members may also play on Saturdays on payment of the appropriate visitors fee. See page 7 of Fixture Book for details. Keith Markwell and Graham Gates met again yesterday for the first time in 50 years. Graham (Wednesday's runner up) came to the clubhouse to attend the presentation and just as Keith was leaving they recognised each other. They worked together at Goldsbrough Mort. Goldsbrough Mort was a large wool auctioneering and brokering business that can trace is founding back to the 1843. Keith can remember taking the results of the day's sales down to the Post Office where they were transmitted by Morse Code for inclusion in the nest days paper. The John Owens Memorial Trophy Draw has been posted on the website.
all the best Kevin Our Saturday competition was a single handicap stroke event where the President's Trophy - Keigwin Cup - was competed for by a field of 64 players. The event was followed by a very well patronised formal dinner in the clubhouse prepared by chef Rob Traz. Please see the photos below. The Keigwin Cup President's Trophy was presented by T.H. Keigwin Esq. who was the first President of the club. It is a handicap stroke event. Last year's winner was David Burgess and this year's winner was Bruce Windybank with a net score of 67. It is the club's oldest trophy. Here are some photos from the very successful President's and 112th Anniversary Dinner. DSR – Daily Scratch Rating
Daily Scratch Rating is a calculation performed at GOLFLink from the daily scores returned from your club. The GOLFLink computer will review the day’s score and compare them to what it believes is a “normal” set of scores that your club would return, and if there is a variance that it determines is significant, will apply a further adjustment in the calculation of the change in the GA Handicap of the players for whom scores have been returned. The purpose of DSR is to account for differing conditions through the day and determine whether a DSR adjustment is to be applied in the calculation of the player's handicap adjustment. By default the day will be split into a morning and afternoon grouping. There are a couple of important points to note:
While GOLFLink will require daily scores to be sent in a single batch, competition results calculated and displayed at the club will be competition-based as per the current model. Similarly, prize allocation will remain competition-based. Today's comp was a 4bbb stableford with a small field of 23 players. This Saturday is the Presidents Trophy, a handicap stroke competition where we compete for the Keigwin Cup. The trophy was presented in 1902 by T G Keigwin Esq - the first president of club. The presentation of the trophy will be made at the dinner.
all the best Kevin Saturday's event was a 4BBB stableford with a field of 69 players. Visitors were in the comp field from Royal Sydney, Green Acres (Vic), Howlong, Oatlands, Cronulla and Wollongong. On Saturday the annual match against Moss Vale for the Bruce Smith Trophy - (The Challenge Cup) was played at Moss Vale. It was the 75th anniversary of the event and Moss Vale retained the trophy with a resounding 5 - 0 victory. The photo shows Moss Vale President Kevin Worthington listening to BGC's President Ian McKenzie during the presentation of the trophy Handicapping Changes – late 2013 how they’ll impact our club, members and guests Later this year, Golf Australia will introduce the new handicapping system. As yet they have not advised a date but will soon commence seminars explaining the changes we are to expect. At Bowral we are still awaiting our new slope rating, as are Moss Vale. Our software suppliers, Golf Computer Systems, have introduced changes into the software that we use for running the competitions in preparation for these changes. The following is an extract from a newsletter they sent to the clubs who use their software. "Slope Ratings & Daily HandicapsThe introduction of a Slope Rating system will bring about a fundamental change in how golfer’s interact with their handicap. To date a golf handicap has been a constant value that the golfer has been able to look up online or via technology or a handicap board at the club. The handicap displayed at GOLFLink has been the handicap the golfer plays off on any course. Once the new systems are implemented, the handicap that a player will see at GOLFLink and on his club handicap record will be termed his GA Handicap, and will not necessarily be the handicap that he will play off. Instead the golfer will have a Daily Handicap that will be calculated based on his GA Handicap and the Slope Rating of the course on which he is playing. A round played off the Blue markers is likely to carry a different handicap than a round played off the White markers, because both sets of markers (courses) will have a differing Slope Rating. The Daily Handicap is the GA Handicap x (Course Slope Rating/113) A player with a GA Handicap of 10, playing on a course with a Slope Rating of 125 will have a handicap of:
Handicaps round up at 0.5 when calculating the Daily Handicap using the formula above. Golfers will need to know the handicap that they are to play off on the course that they are playing. Similarly, the handicap displayed on their scorecard will need to be correctly calculated of course. Golf Australia advise that "it will still ultimately be the player's responsibility to play off the correct Daily handicap" However they also note that "there will be an obligation on clubs to assist players as much is practicable with this (Daily Handicap calculation) process." GCS will display the golfer’s GA Handicap and more prominently the Daily Handicap on the day of play on the player touch screen kiosk(s) to reduce any confusion. We will also perform the necessary calculation to print the correct Daily Handicap onto scorecards." In future blog entries i'll add more about the new handicapping system.
all the best Kevin Wednesday's comp results On the long weekend we have the Bruce Smith Cup, a long running contest between Moss Vale golf club and Bowral Golf Club. It is played at Moss Vale this year and 5 teams from Bowral. This is the 75th year of the competition.
