Gentlemen, today we played a single stableford with a 4BBB in conjunction with a field of 65. The trophy event was the H A Murdoch Trophy. Harry Murdoch was Club Captain on two occasions and also President. Harry donated the original Whales Tooth Trophy in 1930. Today's event as won by Eddie Jones with an excellent score of 43 points. Eddie is married to Annie - Harry's daughter. Fixtures 2014 On-line This year I have presented the on-line calendar in a different way which is easier to navigate around. The Members Handbook contains the fixtures for the year but changes are inevitable - I'll be keeping the on-line fixtures up to date changing it to reflect changes made to the program as soon as they are known. (can click on the pictures to make them bigger) The 'Knife and Fork' icon signifies a 'First Friday' dinner. These are normally on the first Friday of the month but sometimes occur later in the month and this year the 'First Friday' for May will be delayed to Saturday night (3rd May) as the AGM is scheduled for the 2nd of May. Last week we lost John Bryan. John passed away one week ago after a short illness. John and Benita moved to Queensland 2 years ago. John was on the Board and was the House Committee chairman when Bob Young was president. Bob tells that John wanted to donate something to the club but was insistent that the gift remain anonymous. Our best bunker on the course is on the 11th. John donated that. all the best Kevin Gentlemen, today we had 68 in the competition which was a single stableford with a 4BBB in conjunction. A Reminder.
The sign up sheet for the Arthur Brassey Singles Knockout is posted on the notice board. The entry fee is $10 and the receipt must be kept. The closing day for the entries is in the Members Handbook as are the the dates when each round must be played by. The draw will be done within a few days of the closing date for entries. The Members Handbook - fixtures calendar section is published on our website. I'll be keeping it up to date to reflect changes to the program. You can see it by clicking here . This year, rather than duplicating information that is in the calendar by putting it again in the 'Competition Conditions' for an event for the year all dates applicable to an event will be on the website in the calendar. regards Kevin Happy New Year gentlemen, American Foursomes was played as the first game of the year - a few of our members are still away so we had a 'concise' field. Once again there was a small problem producing the results from the computer system, however that was overcome without too much of a problem. A very large pro-pin was won by Alec Dietsch. The Titleist contest was drawn at the presentation. This contest has been running for a number of weeks with the entrants in the running for a Titleist Golf Bag and a chance to win a trip to New Zealand to play a number of fine courses. George Buschman - 7 day playing member - was the winner. Congratulations George. FYI I understand the land adjoining the 11th tee has been sold to the owner of the land behind the 15th tee. That's the land which has been cleared except for the 2 houses on the block. There has not been a development application lodged for the property for the construction phase of the project. Members will have seen that we have been planting around the boundaries to give the new owners of the residences when they are built (as well as us) some privacy.
all the best Kevin Gentlemen, The last event of the year was played in hot conditions. It was a single stableford with a 4bbb in conjunction. Unfortunately the markers on the 14th indicating for nearest the pin and the pro-pin were moved off the green sometime in the afternoon so it could not be determined with certainty who the winners were. Accordingly we will jackpot the pro-pin until next Saturday. (Next Saturday's event is American Foursomes.) There were problems in producing the results Saturday and it was not possible to announce them at the presentation. Below are the checked results of the contest. Next time we play this event, we will be issuing 1 card per player to give more room for markers to record the scores. Many cards from the comp on Saturday were less than perfect so checking them took much longer than usual and this, together with a lack of confidence in the computer result, meant that the announcement of the result was not possible on the day. The club will be closed on New Years Day, as has been previously advised, but some members will be playing social rounds.
my very best regards to all Kevin Gentlemen, almost the last event of the year and a good event. Many members are away over the Christmas period and as a result, of course, the field today was diminished. The winners, aided by (repeat) visitor Peter McCrohon (who incidentally completed the back nine in 1 over) won with 93 points against the second place team's 90 points. Ball winners today were the winners and runners up. ....and on that point it has been considered in the recently and suggested again today, that the prize winners, i.e. the players who get a voucher, not receive a ball. The number of balls awarded for a competition would remain the same but they would go to the best players on the day who didn't win a voucher and hence the balls would go further 'down'. The idea has merit - what do the members think ? - this way of allocation was the norm before and maybe it should return ? Our club has had a good year - the support of every member and the efforts of all of our small staff make our club a great club - not just a golf club. We are all the custodians of the soul of our club. I think it is in good hands. Please accept my best wishes for a merry Christmas and a happy new year. For me it is a privilege to be Captain of our Bowral Golf Club. my very best regards Kevin The 2014 Members Handbook is now available for pickup at the club house. This year we have it as a spiral bound book which has been commented on as an improvement. Last night at the club we had the 2013 Christmas Drinks and Canapés - the evening was very well attended. The raffle was well subscribed -the proceeds will go in part to the refurbishment of the ice machine in the bar which has been a source of much trouble and frustration through the year. The winner of the bottle of Penfolds Grange was gentleman Bill Robinson and Marilyn Wood was very happy to be drawn as the winner of the French Art Work. click on the picture below and then click on the forward & back arrows that appear. Gentlemen, a very nice day - perhaps a bit hot in the afternoon - we had a 3 ball ambrose. The last card in determined the winners with a score of 57 requiring a countback. Below is an article from this month's PGA magazine. The PGA has 4 major trophies each year. The Australian PGA Seniors Championship was won by Bowral Golf Club staff member and professional player Darryl Purchase. Darryl won with rounds of 69, 74 and 67 - two shots clear of second place getter K Olsen. An excellent result for Darryl. (click on the article to make it larger) CORRECTION Michael Brown won last week's Peter Tait Trophy outright. On Saturday the result was calculated incorrectly. As it is a 2 round event, the handicap for the players for the 2 rounds is the same for both rounds - that is the handicap that the player played off in the first round. Using the correct handicap Michael won by 1 stroke instead of by a count back. For count backs we will now adopt Golf Australia's recommendations. Please see the "Competition" tab above. Peter Tait Trophy winner Michael Brown (30) rounds of 62, 72 for a total of 134 all the best
Kevin Gentlemen, The last major events of the year were played today. It was a stroke competition with both the Ted Box Trophy and the Peter Tait Trophy being decided today. The Ted Box Trophy for the Medal of Medals was won by Peter Watson with an excellent round of 64 net. Peter is also the winner of the Mercedes Prize of a weekends use f a Mercedes donated by Macarthur Mercedes The Peter Tait Trophy was only decided by a count-back with Michael Brown and Paul Pettiford both on 135 strokes over the 2 rounds. Michael had a first round score of 62 last week and Paul 68. Both won the monthly medal in their grades. This week Paul had a 67 and Michael a 73 but Michael's last 9 won him the Trophy. On Friday the 20th of December, to celebrate the year-end at our club, we will be providing canapes and free drinks between 5 pm to 6:30 pm for our members and especially the volunteers who support our club so well. There is a raffle with a 1st prize of a bottle of 2002 Penfolds Grange ($600) and a second prize of a French Provincial Handcrafted original artwork valued at $500. Money raised by the raffle will go towards the refurbishment of the ice machine in the bar, a source of continual problems. Entries can be purchased over the bar at $5 each or $20 for 5. Single Stableford in conjunction with 4bbb Last Wednesday we played a Single Stableford in conjunction with a 4bbb and as I wrote in the blog entry for that day there were some issues - small understatement. Everyone's stableford score was captured and reported correctly but the computer did not calculate some of the 4bbb scores correctly (the winners of the 4bbb were correct). Additionally, the the ball winners should have been decided from the single stableford scores but for various reasons balls were awarded to the 16 players with the best 4bbb scores as calculated, with some of these scores they were calculated incorrectly. Here are the top 16 players with their single stableford scores who should have had a ball awarded . Some players on the day already have had balls awarded from the partially incorrect 4bbb list. The players with the asterisk alongside their names who did not have a ball awarded will have a ball credited to their account. Extensive testing on Thursday isolated the problem down to the touch screens calculating the 4bbb score. Golf Computer Systems, the supplier of the software, are now working on a fix. all the best
Kevin This Saturday we compete for the Ted Box trophy for Medal of Medals. The winner also wins the Mercedes Prize. Last years winner was Pascal Timores who had a Mercedes car for his use over the weekend. Macarthur Mercedes generously sponsors the prize.
Gentlemen, A beautiful day to play golf and a busy day in the club with a lunch (for Moss Vale Probus) and a wine tasting for Legacy which was well supported with 80 guests. What a great year this has been for our club. The club house has been busy with functions and the course has never been better. On Friday the 20th of December, to celebrate the year-end at our club, we will be providing canapes and free drinks between 5 pm to 6:30 pm for our members and especially the volunteers who support our club so well. Tickets are available at the bar for the raffle this year. First prize is a bottle of 2002 Penfolds Grange (value $600) and 2nd prize a French Provincial Handcrafted original artwork valued at $500. Tickets are $5 each or 5 for $20. The raffle will be drawn on the night. Today we had a trial of a Single Stableford in conjunction with a 4BBB. The competition ran ok but there were a couple of teams who had issues when entering the score into the computer - these issues will be looked at Thursday. This sort of competition had been popular in clubs for many years and until the R&A made a decision in 2009 was not in compliance with the Rules. This type of competition has the benefit that each player's score is used for handicapping purposes while at the same time having a 'teams' event which are always popular. In the 4bbb contest strategies can be used but advice cannot be exchanged. Further guidance can be found in the Decisions click here . Next Saturday we have the second round of the Peter Tait Trophy and also the Ted Box Trophy for the Medal of Medals.
